The Balaphone by Ray Guillette In the Winter of 1989 I worked at the Saint Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation facility on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indes. I spent my free weekends taking long walks in the rainforest on the side of the island volcano. On one trip I used the machete to select bamboo stalks of various diameters, carrying these back home with me. Home, at the time, was a renovated sugar cane plantation overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
